SAN MINIATO
The medieval charm of Tuscany’s truffle capital
San Miniato, known as one of Italy’s truffle capitals, is a medieval town perched on three small hills between Florence and Pisa.
Its highest point is the Fortress of Frederick II, built around 1220 and famous not only for having been the prison of Pier delle Vigne-a writer and politician close to the Swabian emperor and later killed on the infamous treason conviction-but also for its irreverent profile, which almost seems to make horns.
From here there are unparalleled views of the surrounding countryside, while the village offers fascinating glimpses: don’t miss a visit to the 13th-century cathedral-with its façade on which the constellations of Ursa Major and Minor can be recognized-and a stroll through the beautiful Seminary Square.
A good opportunity to stop in San Miniato and stop by its stores is at the end of November, during the annual White Truffle Market Exhibition.
