Maria Elena will be delighted to welcome you to her farm to introduce you to the ritual of harvesting the world’s most prized spice: saffron!
Under her attentive guidance, you will actively participate in the harvesting of the purple saffron flowers and the hulling process for separating the stigmas from the flower before drying them. You will be fascinated by the delicacy of these patient gestures and the passion with which Maria Elena performs them every day during the flowering period.
At the conclusion of the ritual you will be served a degustation of the farm’s typical products and given a sachet of organic saffron as a memento of your experience as a farmer.
Sportswear and comfortable shoes suitable for walking are required to participate in saffron harvesting. The activity is not accessible to clients with disabilities. The experience is suitable for over 65s and children of all ages as long as parents have appropriate tools for transportation (stroller). Guests are kindly asked to report any food allergies or intolerances in advance by writing to azagrlataverna@virgilio.it. With light rain, the experience is held regularly with the use of umbrella or raincoat, while in case of heavy rain or thunderstorm the visit should be postponed.
